Chak De India is a 2003 Indian biographical sports drama film based on the life of former Indian hockey player Dhanraj Pillay, about a boy who wants to make a difference in his country and is willing to do anything for it. The movie was led by Hrithik Roshan. This movie became an instant success owing to its box office performance and wide acclaim from critics, as it won four Filmfare Awards including Best Film of the Year and some other major awards. It was considered as one of the best sports movies ever made in Indian cinema history along with Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. The film begins in the year 1978. Dhanraj (Hrithik Roshan), a young hockey player from a small town in Punjab, dreams of representing India at the Olympics. He is approached by coach Balraj (Shah Rukh Khan) from the Sports Authority of India to play for the Indian national hockey team under his tutelage. Dhanraj joins the team and overcomes a number of hurdles to fit into the niche of a forward player. He excels during practice matches but fails to perform well during matches against Pakistan and other countries, primarily due to his self-doubts about being accepted as an Indian despite being Punjabi. The other players, realizing his talent, help him see the light. Dhanraj overcomes these insecurities and successfully scores a goal in the final match against Pakistan. The movie depicts Dhanraj's gradual transformation from a reserved, nervous young man to a determined player who represents India at Olympics.Nine members of the Indian men's national field hockey team—including Dhyan Chand—appeared as themselves playing against Dhanraj during practice matches. The Hockey Association of Punjab issued a statement that their effigies were burned by an angry mob in Jalandhar. After the clashes, Hockey Association of Punjab (HAP) was derecognized and Hockey India (HI) took over its functions. The movie was viewed as a success in box office as the collections were quite healthy. The movie had a good response among its target audience as well as critics and has been regarded as one of the best sports movies ever made in Indian cinema history along with Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. The film grossed 1.78 billion at the domestic box office and 2.02 billion worldwide, making it a "big hit" at both the regional and worldwide levels. The film received four Filmfare Awards, including the Filmfare Best Film of the Year Award. The movie garnered thirteen nominations at various categories in various awards ceremonies in India. It won eleven awards including three Indian National Film Awards, fourteen Filmfare Awards and five Star Screen Awards.The movie was made in 1998 for which Hrithik Roshan had to undergo a serious weight loss and physical transformation. He lost twenty-eight kilograms and went on a rigorous training schedule for this role and also learned to play hockey using the professional equipment.
